19 Jul 2024 Why do we work

Let’s start this story from when I was 17. My mother’s friend had a birthday party, her brother lives in London and does some important stuff I don’t care about.
He asked me where I want to go attain bachelor’s degree. I answered - MIPT (the strongest Russian technical university, hardest to get into uni overall). So he decided to give me a small task to solve:

Imagine empty room in space. There is a power outlet and refrigerator, connected to it. Refrigerator is connected to the power, its door is open. Over time, how will room temperature change?

Of course, I didn’t get right answer. I said, temperature will remain constant. While right answer is temperature will increase. Reason being conservation of energy, energy is getting into the room from the outside world, but no energy is getting out of the room. So, if you know basic laws of physics, you’ll get it.

Now let’s apply the same idea. But now our enclosed room is planet Earth. Inside we get sunlight, some radiation, some meteorites from time to time. What gets outside: astronauts, rockets and cultural heritage. Cultural heritage is not really getting outside, but if you think about it, at some point in time it will be exported.

So space industry and creative industries are only exports of humanity as a whole. Most of these industries companies and individuals are from Los Angeles.

What do other 8 billion of people worldwide do? They contribute everything they have to people of Los Angeles. Economy is inner factor, which is not relevant in this physical model.

Now live with it. If you want to make a difference move to Los Angeles.
