I don’t like jumpscares and intense scenes. Blood, violence and injuries scare me. They don’t give me satisfaction. Thrillers do not give me thrill.
Instead I just skip over intimidating parts using arrow buttons or other means. It is not perfect - sometimes I skip over important plot twists, other times preview stops showing up after couple of skips and I have to resume, by coincidence I start playing on the worst frame of jumpscare.
Disabling jumpscares has been on my mind for many years now. It is also one of only both solvable and meaningful applications of artificial intelligence in day to day life. Watch black mirror S4E2 to see what I mean by hiding scary moments from your vision.
While argument above looks feasible, there is truly a flip side to it: “Bravery is not being fearless. Bravery is having a fear and overcoming it”. Removing drama and trauma may seem beneficial in the short term, but imagine people growing up without ever experiencing fear, without feeling danger, without uncertainty and without stress. How would they handle real problems?
